The world of poker has evolved, it’s not as black and white as it used to be when every player would be categorised as a pro or a fish. The overall standard of recreational poker play has been on a steady rise as more and more players put time and effort into studying or thinking about poker.
The spectrum of people who play poker – and the reasons they care about their performance – has never been more diverse nor more interesting. And, as poker enters a new era as an established, mainstream leisure activity, Unibet and The ChipRace podcast want to give something back to the recreational poker community.
Longtime Unibet Poker Ambassadors, David K Lappin and Dara O’Kearney have always lived out the philosophy of prioritising recreational players within poker, being regular faces, and maximisers of buffet value, at live events all over the world.
As the hosts of the GPI Award Winning podcast, The ChipRace, the lads have squeezed some extra value out of Unibet Poker to offer one lucky player the chance to travel to Bucharest with the Unibet Ambassadors for the Unibet Open in November 2023.
If you want the chance to travel with the Irish Pros to Bucharest, then just make a short video recounting your favourite/least favourite bad beat story.
The first round of judging will be done by David and Dara themselves, and they will then hand the list of finalists over to people with proper jobs – the Senior Poker Product Manager and Senior Product Marketing Manager – who will pick the final winner.
Criteria:
Emotion – let the Ambassadors know how the beat impacted you emotionally, or not; you might be a rec-robot, all cool with us.
Clarity – We love serious recreational players, but if you need a solver-translator to understand the beat then it’d better be a short video.
Context – Tell us about the game you were in, who was there, what were the stakes etc? We want to know what sort of person you are at the tables as well as how you engage with the cards.
Company – You’ll be travelling with our Ambassadors, so they’ll want to get a flavour of what that will be like! Is it maccy’s for dinner, or should they book a fancy place? Your entry needs to show your personality as well as tell your bad beat story.
Judging:
David and Dara will narrow down the entries based on the above criteria, and the final winner will be decided by two of the senior managers within the corporate poker team.
There is no right or wrong! All sorts of people are serious recreational poker players, we just want a glimpse of what it would be like to play on a live poker table with you!
However, this is a €2k prize before we even get into the value of travelling with pro players for poker, so there have to be some hard rules:
- Entry Period from 00:01 on 22/09/23 to 23:59 on 13/10/23
- Entrants must be 25+years old
- Entrants must have a Unibet Poker Account
- Entrants need to be able to travel: 29th November – 3rd December 2023
- Entrants may not be professional poker players
- Video entries must be in English

- Competition Open from 00:01 on 22/09/23 to 23:59 on 13/10/23
- Entries received outside these times will not be considered
- Entries must be received as a reply to a Social Media post from one of the Unibet Poker Ambassadors
- The ambassador will reply to the post when they have received the entry
- Entrants must have a Unibet poker account at time of entry
- If the player Unibet account cannot be verified in accordance with local gaming legislation requirements then the full prize will be forfeit
- Unibet poker account player ID must be in the reply post with the video entry
- Round 1 judging will be done by the Unibet Ambassadors who will select the finalists
- Finalists will be announced by 12:00CET on 15th October
- Winners are selected by judges based on criteria stated on ChipRace promotional landing page, no other correspondence will be entered into
- Entrants must be 25+ years old
- Winner will be selected from finalists by Senior Poker Marketing Manager and Senior Poker Product Manager
- Finalist Judging period closes 20/10/23
- Winner will be announced by 12:00CET on 22/10/23
- Winner must be eligible to travel to the event venue on the event dates
- Winner is responsibl for arranging travel to and from the venue
- Package includes: €1k Main Event Entry, 4 Nights in 5* hotel and €250 expenses
- Package does not include any form of personal travel or health insurance
